Brazilian authorities claim they have found the oldest person in the world, Mr. Joao Coelho de Souza (131 years old). Currently Joao is living with his 62-year-old wife and has 3 children.
According to the Guinness Book of Records, the world’s oldest living person is Mr. Yasutaro Koide (112 years old) living in Japan. In particular, the record of the oldest person in the world is held by the French grandmother Jeanne Calment. Jeanne died in 1997 at the age of 122.
However, social security officials in Brazil yesterday (January 13) released a shocking photo of Joao Coelho de Souza, along with a birth certificate stating his date of birth. The birth certificate also lists Joao’s birthplace as Meruoca, Ceara (Brazil). It is about 3,200 km east of her current residence in Acre.
The photos were posted on the Facebook page of a social worker colleague who regularly visited Joao. He later informed the authorities to verify the papers and register for Joao to be recorded in the Guinness Book of Records.
According to Brazilian media, Joao now lives with his 62-year-old wife and 16-year-old granddaughter in the village of Estirao do Alcantara, 30 minutes by boat from the capital Sena Madureira.
Her daughter, Cirlene Souza, said: “My father is now awake, sometimes he doesn’t recognize his children. My mother and I have been together for 40 years and they always depend on each other”.
In response to questions about her father’s age, Cirlene said: “I heard everything you said, some people said it was a lie but others were surprised and admired for his longevity. This sometimes annoys me because everything is on paper and they have been checked by an expert and nothing unusual has been found.”
She also added that Joao had a stroke 6 years ago but could still eat 3 meals a day as usual. His favorite food is rice, meat and fish, the only thing he hates is feijao – a local dish made from beans.
